Nastały czasy złych snów. Tej nocy sny przerwał kolejny koszmar. Wyraźny, jak wszystkie inne, i jak wszystkie inne niejasny.. Ty tam byłeś. Znalazłeś się w smętnym pokoju, który kojarzył Ci się w jakiś sposób z dzieciństwem. Była noc. Dziwna, ciemna noc. Dom nieoświetlony. Jedynie ten pokój zdawał się jaśniejszy, choć był pozbawiony okien. Otwarte drzwi wiodły w ciemność korytarza. Ściany były jasne, lecz w tej czerni nocy nie było to dostrzegalne. Pomieszczenie puste. Jeno na podłodze rozłożony był obszerny dywan. Dziwny dywan, we wzór szachownicy. Równy leżały ciemne i jasne kwadraty. Coś Cię przyciągnęło do niego. Kucnąłeś i ujrzałeś pole wzorów. Wszystkie ciemne kwadraty popisane były jasnymi i tajemniczymi symbolami. Jasne nie wszystkie pokryte były ciemnymi symbolami. W momencie gdy ukończyłeś ostatni znak i odłożyłeś ołówek, rozległ się zapomniany dźwięk zegara, który od lat już nie chodził. {Wybiła północ} Powiedziałeś i powstałeś. Jasne pola poczęły się świecić białym blaskiem. Spojrzałeś na bok i ujrzałeś własną, mglisto-przeźroczystą postać, lub może jej odbicie, stojące na skraju dywanu. Uskoczyło do tyłu, wstępując na gołą podłogę. Wtedy na gwałt ta zjawa wyostrzyła się i zdała w mgnieniu oka postarzeć się, a jej twarz wykrzywiła gorycz i nieznana żądza. W końcu przeistoczyła się w potwora, jakby wyrwanego ledwo z grobu.. Przeląkłeś się tego do głębi. Ciarki przeistoczyły się w prądy, które raziły od stóp do czubka głowy... Zerwałeś się i zeskoczyłeś z dywanu, prąc przez drzwi w ciemność korytarza... Jak tylko opuściłeś świetliste pola, twe ruchy poczęły robić się coraz wolniejsze i bardziej ociężałe, a gdy już opuściłeś pokój, zdałeś się niemal nie móc panować nad sobą. Tam, na korytarzu, natknąłeś się na matkę. I ona przeobrażała się w monstrum. Kroczyła ociężale w Twą stronę, z miną przesiąkniętą smutkiem i nienawiścią. Przesiąknięty strachem, ostatkiem sił wyciągnąłeś po nią swe chude, gnijące łapy, ująłeś pod boki i szarpnąłeś wraz ze swoim ciałem, z powrotem na dywan. Ledwie tam na niego wskoczyłeś, wraz z Matką... Zrazu oboje poczęliście wracać do siebie, a przy tym otoczenie dywanu, pokój, poczęły zanikać... Lęk nie dał mi ujrzeć końca tego koszmaru. Zbudziłem się i nie dane mi było już zasnąć. Noc dalej popłynęła w niepewności...
